AFFORDABLE HOUSING
Veterans, retirees, seniors, lower-income families, and renters rooted in our community are getting priced out of their own neighborhoods. Individuals that work in our city cannot afford to live in our city — including some of our nurses, police officers and firefighters. The city has recently given the green light to help fund three new affordable housing projects. They will be the first affordable housing units to be built in over 12 years. Developing additional projects is a top priority.
Solicit and partner with affordable housing builders and develop additional projects.
Apply for State and Federal Grants that become available to fund workforce housing development, possibly in partnership with the Agua Caliente Band of Mission Indians.
Designate a portion of the vacation rental tax to support the development and construction of affordable housing options in our communities.
Require large developers to include a certain amount of affordable housing, when feasible, into their new projects, or pay into a fund that would support the building of affordable housing. This can include higher density apartment complexes (with guidelines on height and scope) and the passage of the Inclusionary Housing Ordinance.
Cut down on the red tape with the City so that we can attract quality developers to begin building these types of affordable housing to meet the quickly expanding population of Palm Springs.
These types of affordable housing will give the workforce community a chance to live and work in Palm Springs, something that has not been attainable to many in our community for years. This helps our local businesses attract and keep a quality workforce who are residents of the community that they work in.
