PROTECTING AND NURTURING OUR CHILDREN AND YOUNG ADULTS
District 1 is home to many of the children and young adults who live in Palm Springs. Their lives are directly impacted by many of the issues that face this city and the decisions we make on how to act to fix them. We must do more to support and protect our children and young adults, so they can thrive through access to education, art and music, basic life skill training, and social programs. Moving beyond just talking about what is needed, it is my pledge to create these types of programs for our children and young adults.
Develop community based programs for our young children that encourage reading and education.
Develop a cohesive working group consisting of our Library, our Parks & Recreation Department, James O Jessie Center, Demuth Community Center, the Boys & Girls Club, and the School District to develop or expand free programs citywide, and in each neighborhood, to foster the desire to learn.
In addition to the city’s Summer lunch Program and the School District Lunch Program, we should partner with local restaurants and Find Food Bank to make sure there is food available at our community centers, our skate park, and the Boys & Girls Club. No child should go to school, or go to bed, hungry in Palm Springs.
Continue the upgrades and restoration of our park equipment, and help develop more parks in District 1.
Tap into our lush artistic community to develop programs specialized in artist expression, exploration and education for our children and young adults, respectively. Devise partnerships with local art galleries, museums, and independent artists to help young adults discover if they have a passion for art.
Work with local theater and performing arts centers to open up free access to live performance, as well as workshops within our neighborhoods to allow both children and young adults to experience the magic of watching and creating live performances.
Create work-study/internship programs within the city government to create a talent pipeline from our own residents to explore and experience working for the city they live in.
